Onyx: Pitch Pipe app for iPhone and iPad
Developer: forScore, LLC
First release : 30 Sep 2011
App size: 16.23 Mb
Start off on the right note every time with Onyx. This beautiful pitch pipe sports a three-octave range in C-C or F-F, with your choice of carefully crafted sounds: choose piano or clarinet to hear your note for several seconds, or switch to continuous playback mode* to loop strings or horns for as long as you like. Or, for pinpoint accuracy, use our custom sine wave generator instead and avoid those annoying loud pops that other apps can create. On iOS, all sounds can be tuned to your preferred frequency (due to technical limitations fine tuning is only available when using the Tone sound option on Apple Watch). Use the interactive widget and the watch app for instant access from just about anywhere. Onyx even works when your device is in silent mode, so you dont have to worry about embarrassing interruptions. Thats our pitch, now find yours!
* Continuous playback mode is currently only supported within the app and cannot be used with the Today View widget or on Apple Watch.
Latest reviews of Onyx: Pitch Pipe app for iPhone and iPad
After looking over all of the available pitch pipe apps and trying several of the free ones, I decided to invest $0.99 on Pitch, Please! Well worth the investment - the pitches are precise, its great to be able to span 3 octaves, and the piano note in particular is loud enough without sounding for too long a period of time.
I like this app because it is set up like an actual pitch pipe. Other free apps I tried had just pitches listed. I like the option of having a clarinet, piano, or tone. The tone option sounds much like a real pitch pipe. Plus you have two options ending the pitch. It can die on its own after a few seconds or you can press the center again and it will mute the pitch. I also like the options for tuning. Every band/choir is different, so you can adjust your tuning to them with this app.
What sold me on this app is the fact that it will still function when the phone sound is turned off. This is absolutely essential in a performing environment. It is visually pleasant, and easy to use. It automatically switches octaves as you click around the circle, and its tone options are nice, too. In the future Id love to have volume control within the app, but the phones volume buttons certainly work fine for now. Nice job designing this app!
The addition of the portrait lock setting makes this version much more usable than the last update. Sometimes its the little things that make a big difference! Thanks for responding so quickly to the feedback.
Great App! It would be great if you created a widget for the iPhone like the one you created for forScore for the iPad. It would be very helpful to have that widget on my iPhone.
